Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive weight loss operation. About 2/3 of the stomach is removed reducing the amount of food that can be eaten and removing the part of the stomach which secretes ghrelin. Elevated ghrelin makes a person hungry and having less ghrelin causes sleeve gastrectomy patients to be less hungry.
Sleeve gastrectomy patients lose about the same amount of weight as a gastric bypass patients. The chance of needing a second surgery is less with a sleeve compared to a gastric bypass or a gastric band, plus some studies show weight lose can continue up to three years. If more weight loss is desired a sleeve can be converted to a gastric bypass or a gastric band can be placed on the sleeve restricting food intake even more. Once the sleeve has healed, a person can eat just about anything in smaller amounts and pills do not need to be crushed like often required with gastric bands.
